The Hypocritical Left
The constitutional republic of America fails because of sin. This is the reason why all political systems will fail; and by fail I mean resulting in an elimination of liberty. A successful political enterprise is one that perpetuates liberty, and liberty brings with it the bounty of personal prosperity and its corresponding happiness.
The unbeliever cannot admit this much, since they have no doctrine of sin. For them, a political system fails due to human failure. Exploitation, manipulation, collectivism—all are the causes of political destruction. In stating this much, however, they are admitting to sin, though they work to avoid that theological descriptive. Still, both Christian and non are agreed that man's darker side is what usually snuffs the breath out of the political body.
These past seven years have been most illuminating, since at no time have we ever seen so many Leftists highlighting the U.S. Constitution. Their beef? Religion! They're fighting what they believe to be the attempts by conservative Christians to seize Federal power in order to modify the American political system along theocratic lines. A significant aspect of this battle lies in historical revisionism, i.e., who actually owns the American narrative? Was America founded as a Christian nation, and does the Constitution forbid any religious legislation by Congress? The Religious Right says, "yes," and secularists say, "no."
Granted, many of those very same Leftists are decrying the despotism of the neoconservative-controlled Bush administration, but they deem the Religious Right as chaplains of the new American Reich. In short, their constitutional emphasis has focused primarily on keeping James Dobson out of the West Wing and cutting the power on Bush's wiretapping. Well and good, but hardly consistent. To be strict constitutionalists they must sever all the tyrannical tentacles presently choking the life out of the American people.
Do Leftists want a Federal law to secure gay marriage in all fifty states? Do they want similar legislation for abortion? Do they support the unjust mandatory taxation of their neighbor to underwrite healthcare for those without it? Do they also want that same taxation to provide education for every child? Do they want to forbid a Christian from keeping their portion of their tax money if they choose NOT to send their child to a public school?
These positions are all unconstitutional, but you'll never hear a peep out of any Leftist about it. Why? Because they're hypocrites when they cite the Constitution. Leftists are not constitutionalists because a constitutional republic is NOT their political ideal. Their idea of civil liberty is keeping Christians out of their bedrooms. Leftists are statists, and they will always migrate to the utopian fields of socialism. All things must be regulated by the state.
I'll put it this way: were there no rise of the Religious Right; and 9/11 was merely a date on the calendar; and had Al Gore won the 2000 presidential election, we wouldn't hear a word about the Constitution from the Left. They want all other unconstitutional legislation to remain secure as the benevolent tyranny of "Big Sister" government drains working people of their resources to provide cradle to grave security for both the unfortunate and the lazy.
If I hear one more moronic voice from the Left trying to explain Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists it will be too soon. These constitutional "Johnny come lately's" are doing more to harm the public understanding of the U.S. Constitution during a time when clarity is most needed. The U.S. Constitution is an anti-statist, anti-centralist, anti-socialist, anti-collectivist document. They should teach it as such, or cease using it in their grossly limited fashion.
